When taking on a fixer-upper property, a simple cosmetic update isn't always enough to unleash its true potential. Our latest featured project—a comprehensive, multi-room Bensenville home remodeling job—represents a complete transformation from an outdated, closed-off layout into a breathtaking, modern open-concept living space.

From structural teardowns to completely brand-new mechanicals, kitchen cabinetry, and bathroom luxury, here is how we took this home down to the studs and rebuilt it with flawless precision.

The Vision: True Open-Concept Living

The original layout of this home felt incredibly cramped, cut off by dark partition walls and weighed down by decades-old fixtures. The overarching goal was to create an airy, functional space where the kitchen, dining, and living areas flowed together organically.

  • The Kitchen & Living Space: We traded a tiny, isolated cooking corner for a massive, sun-drenched open kitchen. The completed space features bright white custom cabinetry, premium stainless steel appliances, seamless recessed lighting, and rich, dark hardwood floors that provide an elegant, grounding contrast.

  • The Modern Bath Oasis: The transformation extended into a gorgeous new bathroom retreat. Large-format marble-look tiles surround the deep soaking tub, which is secured by a custom frameless glass divider. A minimalist white vanity with polished chrome fixtures sits neatly against a calming, neutral grey backdrop.

  • Mechanical Upgrades: True remodeling excellence means updating what is behind the utility doors, too. We overhauled the home's infrastructure by installing a brand-new energy-efficient HVAC furnace and a premium hot water heater to guarantee comfort for decades to come.

Overcoming Structural and Technical Challenges

A full-scale gut renovation like this Bensenville home remodeling project is never without its challenges. Overcoming deep architectural constraints is what separates professional execution from DIY attempts.

1. Removing a Massive Load-Bearing Wall

To achieve a completely open floor plan, we had to eliminate the primary wall dividing the kitchen from the main living area. Because this wall was fully load-bearing and supported the weight of the roof structure, we couldn't simply tear it down. Our structural team erected temporary support walls, carefully engineered the span, and hoisted a massive, heavy-duty structural wood header beam into place. Safely transferring the home's weight onto this structural beam allowed us to open up the room without sacrificing an inch of safety.

2. Rewriting an Outdated Footprint

The kitchen's original state featured cramped, strangely proportioned cabinetry and a vintage, drop-in yellow gas stovetop that had seen better days. Taking exact measurements down to the fraction of an inch during the initial planning phase was critical. We had to completely reroute the gas supply lines, electrical circuits, and plumbing waste lines through the subfloor to accommodate the newly configured open-concept kitchen layout.

3. Precision Tiling Under Tricky Constraints

In the bathroom, installing large-format horizontal wall tiles around an existing glass-block window cutout requires meticulous planning. If the wall framing isn't perfectly square, large tiles will immediately show imperfections. Our team applied green, mold-resistant drywall, completely leveled the tile beds, and utilized advanced leveling clips to achieve perfectly flat, flush seams that outline the tub enclosure beautifully.
